Summary

Science-fiction drama starring Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones. In the late 21st century, life on Earth is threatened by a series of mysterious cosmic surges. Major Roy McBride is sent into space to investigate, as officials believe the events could be connected with his father, an astronaut who went missing during a voyage to Neptune. When Roy's mission in turn breaks down, he is left on a dangerous solo journey through the solar system.

Brad Pitt stars as an astronaut sent to investigate life-threatening wrinkles far beyond the solar system in an extravagant science-fiction drama that's both thrill-packed and thought-provoking. His journey is complicated by the suspicion that the mysterious electrical surges may have something to do with his father (Tommy Lee Jones) who disappeared on a previous mission several years earlier. Director James Gray references numerous other sci-fi works along the way, as well as such diverse films as Apocalypse Now and Field of Dreams, as Pitt contends with gunfights, lunar car chases, interplanetary outlaws and otherworldly creatures. There are philosophical questions to punctuate the intergalactic action, although it occasionally feels like Gray is trying to shoehorn too many disparate ideas into the two-hour running time. Pitt's charisma carries the human element, assisted by dazzling visuals and an intelligent screenplay, resulting in a film that reaches further for the stars than most in the genre.
