Things may not be what they seem in this fork-tongued fairy tale from director Alexandre Aja (Crawl). But its hiss is certainly worse than its bite. The world has been devastated by a mysterious apocalyptic event, and Halle Berry's unnamed mother and her twin sons appear to be its only survivors. The family lives deep in the woods, stalked by a great horror that only she can see. Fortunately, their house is sacred ground: as long as they remain tethered to it via ropes, they will be safe from the forest's demonic forces. Never Let Go repeats its title often enough that its stakes begin to feel real. When the ropes are inevitably cut, though, the film fails to make good on its promises. The problem isn't the acting or atmosphere (Aja, who made his name as part of the New French Extremity movement, crafts some spectacularly nasty moments). It's that the movie's threats are only vaguely defined and its metaphors strained. A better version of the material might have kept its audience guessing - but this one tries, and fails, to have its tree bark and eat it too.
