Bratty theatre kids and pretentious tutors make up this fitfully funny mockumentary set in an upstate New York summer camp. AdirondACTS is in trouble when its founder Joan (Amy Sedaris) collapses, leaving her initially indifferent son Troy (Jimmy Tatro) to take over. That's no small challenge, what with the bank threatening closure and a rival camp hovering, vulture-like, to swoop in and grab their land. To save the day, this keen group of thesps resolves to put on "Joan, Still", a tribute to their ailing leader. Inspired by Christopher Guest's classic mockumentary Waiting for Guffman, debut directors Nick Lieberman and Molly Gordon show their inexperience, as the mock-doc set-up is quickly dropped, and some characters - particularly the younger ones - are left underdeveloped. But some of the adults nail it, notably Gordon and co-writer Ben Platt, who are very funny as the two extravagant creatives behind the "Joan, Still" show. The film as a whole is hit-and-miss, but it will make you giggle.
