This lacklustre, 1990s-set reboot of the Resident Evil franchise takes us back to the beginning, with a story that merges the plots of the first two video-games upon which the series is based. Kaya Scodelario plays the plucky Claire Redfield, who returns to Raccoon City to find that her police officer brother (Robbie Amell) is investigating the shady Umbrella Corporation. At the centre of Umbrella's dastardly deeds is Dr William Birkin (Neal McDonough), who has been conducting macabre experiments that may be turning residents into zombies. Director Johannes Roberts (47 Metres Down) sticks close to the games, which might please fans, but the film's disparate stories don't mesh, and the script merely offers up clichés and identikit characters. Samey shenanigans, actors on autopilot and a lack of decent action or scares add to the impression of a film simply going through the motions, much like the walking dead.
