Summary
In 2022, director Dan Trachtenberg reinvigorated the Predator franchise with the bloodthirsty survival thriller Prey set in 18th-century North America. He co-directs an animated sci-fi adventure with screenwriter Micho Robert Rutare, which tracks the history of the Predators through three different periods in human history. A Viking raider (Lindsay LaVanchy) and her young son are on a quest for revenge when they cross paths with the fearsome otherworldly hunter. A ninja (Louis Ozawa Changchien) in feudal Japan wields his sword against the alien adversary as he battles for succession with his brother and a Second World War pilot (Rick Gonzalez) warns comrades that their enemy isn't just the Nazis but something from another planet

Calum Baker
After scoring a hit in 2022 with Prey, which transplanted one of Predator's alien manhunters to the plains of 1719 North America, co-writer/director Dan Trachtenberg crafts more of the same with an animated action flick that continues to expand the franchise's universe. Here, the elite warriors are tasked with hunting down and slaughtering the finest fighters on Earth so that a "killer of killers" can be crowned. The film's first three acts find a Viking warrior, a medieval samurai and an American Second World War pilot facing off against different Predators, before a grand finale brings the time-hopping tales together. It's all a little juvenile, with a visual style that falls somewhere between a great video game and a schlocky comic book. There's also a half-hearted smattering of themes about honour, vengeance and teamwork. However, Trachtenberg makes excellent use of the opportunities given by animation, throwing in plenty of outrageous violence and giving his three human heroes some satisfying moments of cartoon ingenuity, particularly during the Pacific dogfight. Unmissable for fans of the franchise; diverting enough mayhem for everyone else.
