Summary
Francis Ford Coppola's finale to The Godfather saga, starring Al Pacino, Diane Keaton and Andy Garcia. New York, 1979: Michael Corleone wants out of his criminal empire in a search for respectability. But it's difficult to break with the family tradition. Inevitably, the tentacles of the old business prove all-embracing and powerful, with fatal consequences.

Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo never intended the third part of the Corleone saga to be a direct sequel to The Godfather Part II. However, Paramount marketeers coerced them into accepting the title The Godfather Part III over "The Death of Michael Corleone" when the film was rush-released in 1990. Coppola was never happy with the edit, and this 2020 version allows him to make judicious changes, while losing around 20 minutes of expendable action. The plot remains much the same, with Michael (Al Pacino) determining to end the family's criminal empire for good, but the most notable shift is the relocation of the meeting between Michael and Vatican banker Archbishop Gilday (Donal Donnelly), which becomes part of the opening sequence. The papal dedication is removed to give proceedings momentum, while the motives of Vincent Mancini (Andy Garcia) and Joey Zasa (Joe Mantegna) become clearer. Most significantly, Sofia Coppola's performance as Mary has been finessed to make shortcomings in her acting technique feel more like character traits. The monstrous grandeur of the Sicilian denouement remains, albeit with heightened ferocity, and there's a subtle alteration to the ending. As a consequence, while the film continues to frustrate as much as it fascinates, its faults feel less egregious, and it delivers as an operatic melodrama.
