Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Steve Martin and John Candy are on excellent form here as mismatched strangers desperately trying to get home for Thanksgiving. Writer/director John Hughes (branching out after a string of teen movies including The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off) delightfully sends up the vagaries of the American transport system, but occasionally finds it difficult to balance the slapstick with the sentimental. Yet, the cheerfully astute playing by the disaster-prone leads ensures that the farcical proceedings are always fun to watch.
