Every Breath You Take

Strewn with clichés and caricatures, this is a competent but utterly redundant knock-off of the Cape Fear scenario. Sam Claflin plays the menacing sociopath who ingratiates himself with the wife (Michelle Monaghan) and daughter (India Eisley) of psychiatrist Casey Affleck, whom he holds responsible for the death of his sister. First-time screenwriter David Murray seeks to muddy the waters by making Affleck flawed as both a practitioner and a parent, but he and the rest of the cast are hampered by dialogue straight out of a penny dreadful. The clunking predictability of the plot makes it impossible for director Vaughn Stein (Terminal) to generate any suspense, but he does make the most of the atmospheric scenery.
