Drama based on a true story, starring Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman and Michelle Monaghan. Boston, 2013: when the annual Boston Marathon is targeted by terrorist bombers and three people are killed, an experienced beat cop and his colleagues join forces with the FBI in a race against time to bring the perpetrators to justice.
This is a sometimes thrilling but largely by-the-book account of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and seriously injured many more. Mark Wahlberg plays to blue-collar type as a beat cop who heads the hunt for the bombers, with Kevin Bacon lending support as an FBI agent who butts heads with John Goodman's police commissioner. Rather too much time is spent on the flight of the bombers rather than the tense build-up to what we know is about to happen. Director Peter Berg also can't resist a bit of flag-waving and "Boston Strong" sentiment in the finale. However, that aside, this is old-fashioned, no-frills action film-making, and the approach has served Berg and Wahlberg well on a string of macho-minded projects including Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon and Spenser Confidential).
