Though unquestionably a film of faith, Miracles from Heaven doesn't ram its religiosity down your throat quite as much as many others of its kind do. Not until a horribly over-fluffy finale, that is. Instead, this Jennifer Garner vehicle can be enjoyed as just a weepie that pushes all those big, emotional buttons. Based on real events, it's the story of a 10-year-old Texan girl whose potentially fatal digestive illness defies all medical treatments, but who is inexplicably cured after she survives a 30-foot fall down a hollow tree. But is it divine intervention or spontaneous regression? As the churchgoing "mom", Garner is in no doubt at all, despite a pre-fall crisis of faith. This drama takes its time. It feels long, too, but it is well made and acted, and The 33 director Patricia Riggen explores guts and goodness as much as she does grace and God. Until that over-the-top ending, anyway.
