Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Adapted from John Green's beloved young adult novel, this bittersweet tear-jerker alternates between mawkish melodrama and heartfelt sincerity. Shailene Woodley is utterly disarming as Hazel, a precocious teenager who is living a restricted lifestyle due to thyroid cancer. Reluctantly attending a local support group, Hazel is approached by an optimistic charmer named Gus (Ansel Elgort), who is in remission after losing one of his legs to bone cancer. Quickly falling for each other, the star-crossed teens strike up a romantic relationship that is destined to end in tragedy. Woodley has a smile that lights up the screen and is utterly believable, even when the story isn't, while Elgort remains endearing despite being burdened with some mushy dialogue. So, even though the film's manipulative tendencies make it unlikely to win over cynics, sentimental viewers will be reaching for the tissues.
