After proving popular among viewers and becoming a ratings hit for the BBC, new comedy Ann Droid is now being tipped for a second season.

The AI-themed sitcom, which is set in 2029 and stars Diane Morgan as a second-hand care robot, pulled in 4 million viewers with its opening episode over the first week, according to Broadcast, including 1.9 million live viewers on BBC One, and the rest on catch-up.

According to The Sun, a second season is already being developed by the show’s production company Boffola Pictures, though the BBC is yet to formally announce the commission.

The BBC declined to comment when approached by Radio Times.

Set in 2029, Ann Droid follows Sue (Sue Johnston) whose son (Paul Ready) buys her a new companion following the death of her husband – an outdated and inept care robot called Linda (Morgan).

As well as pulling in a big audience, Ann Droid has received largely positive reviews, with our own review awarding the show three stars and praising Morgan’s performance.

"As she’s previously demonstrated in Cunk and Mandy, she delivers another comedic masterclass," critic James Hibbs wrote.

"The series delivers on the emotional front, examining bereavement and loneliness with surprising nuance and resonance."
