Review

David Brown

This 2019 whodunnit has done the rounds, having begun life on streamer Acorn, repeated on 5 and now dusted down here. But it’s a wise decision on the part of U&Drama as it’s a delightful thing — traditionally plotted yet tongue in cheek and with a premise that’s irresistible to lovers of mystery fiction.

This opener sets out its stall nicely, with Det Sgt Matilda Stone (Olivia Vinall) returning to her home village of Wildemarsh, where she’s back in the company of a trio of crime-writing aunties (Julie Graham, Sarah Woodward and Siobhan Redmond) who can’t resist meddling in her cases. Matilda’s first investigation: the murder of a bestselling author, who’s met his maker at a gorgeous country pile.
