A regular entry on any list of the greatest television dramas, Peter Flannery’s state-of-the-nation nine-parter, first broadcast in 1996, had ambition, humanity and ideas to burn.
Following four friends (future stars Christopher Eccleston, Daniel Craig, Gina McKee, Mark Strong) from Newcastle between 1964 to 1995 as youthful dreams curdle and lives diverge and overlap, it weaved in real characters and events from corruption in local councils and the Flying Squad to the miner’s strike and decline in social housing, all filtered through the warp and weft of left-wing politics.
The series’ acuity and impact is undiminished after decades of history repeating – and Oasis have surely never sounded better than in the famous final, elegiac sequence.
