The trailer begins with a short introduction from Edgar-Jones herself, before we see footage of her playing the lead role of Elinor Dashwood – who was played by Dame Emma Thompson in the earlier 1995 adaptation of the novel.

At the start of the trailer, Elinor and her family are told they must relocate from their home – with their new life soon bringing her into contact with a young man named Edward Ferrars (George Mackay) by whom she is instantly charmed.

We also see several other members of the starry cast, including Esmé Creed-Miles as Elinor's sister Marianne, Outlander's Caitríona Balfe as their mother Mrs Dashwood, Fiona Shaw as eccentric aunt Mrs Jennings, Frank Dillane as John Willoughby and Stacey Martin as Fanny Dashwood.

The film will be helmed by Georgia Oakley – whose debut 2022 feature Blue Jean was a critical hit – with the script having been adapted by Diana Reid.

It is currently slated for release on Friday 25 September, with the brief synopsis provided by Focus Features promising "a charming, witty, and deeply relatable story of love and sisterhood".

Austen's 1811 novel was previously turned into an award-winning film by acclaimed Taiwanese director Ang Lee, with Thompson winning an Oscar for writing the screenplay in addition to getting a nomination for her performance as Elinor.

The cast for that version also included Kate Winslet as Marianne, Hugh Grant as Edward Ferrars, Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon and Hugh Laurie as Mr Palmer.
