When it was revealed that Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink had been cast in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, its safe to say that Marvel fans, journalists and internet sleuths were desperate to figure out the mystery.
But, true to form, Marvel weren’t playing ball.
Trailer after trailer came and went with no mention of Sadie Sink’s character. We didn’t even get so much as a confirmed shot of her in any of the film's marketing.
Even when the press tour kicked off and the actress started doing interviews, she kept schtum on the true identity of her character. She even teased audiences with a reveal on social media before, very cleverly, pulling the rug from under us at the last second.

The Brand New Day press tour has been a masterclass from both Sadie Sink and Marvel/Sony in how to build hype around a film's central mystery.
Theories abound, of course. The most popular of which is that Sink is playing a new version of the X-Men character Jean Grey. A rumour fuelled by Ryan Reynolds's recent appearance at Comic Con where he wore a ‘jean grey’ coloured Deadpool suit.
Other theories include Mayday Parker, Peter and MJ’s daughter from the future (or perhaps another timeline?) and the Spidey villain Typhoid Mary.
Thankfully, the wait is finally over. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is out in cinemas and we finally know who Sadie Sink is playing. Read on as we explore the reveal and what it means for the future of the MCU.
But beware, if you haven’t seen Spider-Man: Brand New Day, turn back now…
Who does Sadie Sink play in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Sophie Turner previously played Jean Grey in 2019's X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Fox
After causing psychic chaos across New York and making an enemy of Spidey, we finally get confirmation that Sadie Sink is, in fact, playing Jean Grey, following in the footsteps of previous cinematic Jeans, Sophie Turner and Famke Janssen.
That’s right, Sink is the first major MCU X-Men character to appear in the Earth-616 universe (the main MCU universe). Outside of Ms Marvel and the classic Fox X-Men characters from Earth-10005 universe, the MCU has been surprisingly light on mutants up to this point, which is what makes Jean Grey’s appearance all the more exciting.
She’s set up slightly differently than her comics counterpart in that it appears her parents abandoned both her and her sister at a young age, which brought them into the crosshairs of Damage Control (the nefarious organisation in Spidey's New York that cleans up the debris after epic superhero battles). This eventually led to her sister, Sara, being taken by Damage Control and experimented on by their leader Bill Metzger.

Her powers also manifest slightly differently in Brand New Day with her having the ability to psychically jump into people’s bodies, essentially possessing them. While this isn’t a standard Jean Grey power it’s not a mile off of what she normally can do.
For a film so concerned with mutation and feeling isolated because of your differences it feels like the perfect place to start planting the seeds for Marvel’s next major saga. We know that there’s an X-Men film on the horizon being helmed by Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier and now we have our first X-Men character in Jean Grey. The question is, who’s next?
