The new psychological musical drama is made up of original songs written by the likes of Jack Antonoff and Charli xcx.
Mother Mary marks only the first of five leading roles for beloved Oscar-winning star Anne Hathaway set to debut in 2026 – and is perhaps one of her most distinctive roles to date.
The film follows the titular Mother Mary (Hathaway) a world-renowned pop star on the brink of an emotional breakdown, who finds herself drawn back to her estranged ex-friend and fashion designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel). What begins as a less-than-friendly reunion quickly dissolves into a tale of trauma, love and resentment, complicated by some potentially mystical forces that may or may not be coming between the duo.
Of course, a pop star is nothing without her music – and as such, Mother Mary is set to an atmospheric, dark pop soundtrack, with many of the film's tracks performed by Hathaway herself.

The Mother Mary: Greatest Hits album was released on 17 April 2026, and is made up of seven songs, all performed by Hathaway and written by the likes of Jack Antonoff, Charli xcx and FKA Twigs.

Who composed the Mother Mary score?
The film's score was composed by Daniel Hart, an American musician who is a frequent collaborator of director David Lowery's, having also composed the music for A Ghost Story, The Green Knight and The Old Man and the Gun.
