Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The original Karate Kid cycle of films were perplexingly successful in their day, especially given that all the usual clichés had been exhausted well before the end of the first movie. The only interesting aspect of this by-the-numbers sequel is that the action is set largely in Japan. Apart from that, this is an uninspired retread of the original, with wise old Pat Morita teaching some new tricks to doting young protégé Ralph Macchio. Even at the age of 27, Macchio was still fresh-faced enough to return for the second sequel, but he was replaced in the third - The Next Karate Kid - by future two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank.
