Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Probably better known as a hit stage play (filmed faithfully by Robert Altman in 1988), this first-rate drama was first adapted in 1954 and stars Humphrey Bogart playing against type as Queeg, the martinet captain of a US minesweeper during the Second World War. His arrival on the ageing USS Caine causes a stir among its war-weary crew (including Fred MacMurray and Lee Marvin) but mockery soon turns to disdain and then outright mutiny when Van Johnson's second officer is moved to relieve a panicking Queeg of his command. A compelling courtroom drama ensues. It's familiar Hollywood fare but it doesn't matter. Bogart gives a mighty performance as the craven Queeg, a million miles away from iconic heroes like Philip Marlowe or Casablanca's Rick Blaine. Here's Bogie as snivelling paranoiac, obsessing over missing strawberries or nervously clicking ball bearings together in his hand, and yet he still arouses our sympathy. It was his last great performance (he died three years later) and earned him a well-deserved Oscar nomination.
