Summary

Catherine Clare reluctantly trades life in 1980 Manhattan for a remote home in the tiny hamlet of Chosen, New York, after her husband George lands a job teaching art history at a small Hudson Valley college. Even as she does her best to transform the old dairy farm into a place where young daughter Franny will be happy, Catherine increasingly finds herself isolated and alone. She soon comes to sense a sinister darkness lurking both in the walls of the ramshackle property-and in her marriage to George. A Horror Thriller Starring Amanda Seyfried, James Norton and Natalia Dyer.

Based on Elizabeth Brundage's 2016 novel All Things Cease to Appear, but with a few literary pretensions of its own, this horror thriller from writer/directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor) tries to add extra layers of depth to the humble ghost story, in the process missing the point completely. When ambitious university lecturer George (James Norton) moves his wife Catherine (Amanda Seyfried) and daughter Franny (Ana Sophia Heger) from Manhattan to rural upstate New York, the haunted-house clichés - half-glimpsed figures, a piano that plays itself, bad smells - quickly pile up. Yet the biggest threat seems to be that he's a massive creep, shacking up with local student Willis (Natalia Dyer) and gaslighting poor Catherine at every turn. The film's glossy, unreal air and existential musings suggest there might be a clever, Charlie Kaufman-style twist on the way. Sadly, there isn't, and the combination of familiar domestic drama, underwhelming mystery and sixth-form philosophy adds up to a lot of chin-stroking for very little reward.
