Matt Glasby

Taking place across five increasingly fraught years, this chilling drama by Polish director Jan Komasa (Corpus Christi) charts the downfall of an upper middle-class American family. When university lecturer Ellen Taylor (Diane Lane) and her husband Paul (Kyle Chandler) hold a party to celebrate 25 years of marriage, their son (Dylan O'Brien) brings his ambitious new girlfriend Elizabeth (Phoebe Dynevor), much to the chagrin of his sisters (Madeline Brewer, Zoey Deutch and Mckenna Grace). Though outwardly pleasant, Elizabeth has some alarming anti-democratic views - and is writing a polemical book that will help a new movement called The Change sweep into power. To begin with, Lori Rosene-Gambino's literate script keeps its characters at a distance, but as the full horror of the new regime comes into focus, so do they. As a portrait of ordinary people pulled apart by politics it is perhaps a little too schematic, but as an illustration of how fascism creeps into all corners of our lives, not with a gun but with a grin, it's essential viewing.
