Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Remember when Cliff Richard got himself a crying, talking, sleeping, walking, living doll? Midwestern weirdo Lars (Ryan Gosling) doesn't go quite that far; instead, bereft of human companionship, he sends off for a Real Doll life-size mannequin, and presents her as Bianca, his new-found internet friend. Conscious of Lars's fragile mental state, close-knit family, friends and townsfolk indulge him in his delusion, and treat Bianca as real, too. And, gradually, the custom-made cutie does assume sort-of-real status, becoming a pillar of local society. Its whimsy won't be to everyone's taste, but this is an endearing fable that's nicely acted by a cast that also includes Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson.
