A star rating of 3 out of 5.

James Mottram

Marriages are put to the test in this raucous "unromantic" comedy, which hinges on the entwining lives of two sets of friends. Carey (Kyle Marvin) and Ashley (Adria Arjona) are on the verge of divorce. When Carey seeks comfort from Paul (Michael Angelo Covino) and Julie (Dakota Johnson), they reveal that they are in an open relationship. That arrangement is put to the test when Carey sleeps with Julie - a move that erupts with all the force of a long-dormant volcano. Scripted by Marvin and Corvino (who made 2019's The Climb), the film boasts a riotous energy, especially during a barnstorming central clash between Carey and Paul. Corvino directs with brio, although sometimes the insights into modern-day couplings get lost amid the inherent craziness. It's a smartly acted film, even if it only hits a couple of the nerves it seeks to.
