Summary

Drama based on a true story, starring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek. When a 31-year-old American mysteriously disappears from his home in the Chilean capital of Santiago following the military coup in 1973, his wife and father battle official indifference in their attempt to find out what happened to him.

Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Alan Jones

The US State Department denounced Costa-Gavras's uncompromising human drama when it was first released because of possible political repercussions. But then the director of Z and State of Siege was used to causing controversy, and this riveting true saga proved to be his most accessible Kafka-esque nightmare. What happened to American writer Charles Horman, who disappeared during the military coup that overthrew the Allende government of Chile in 1973? That's what his liberal wife Sissy Spacek and staunchly conservative father Jack Lemmon try to find out in a compelling moral tale, brought shockingly to life with incredible immediacy and impact.
