Two couples collide in this striking, deeply humane South Korean film from the great director Lee Chang-dong (Burning). Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) lives with Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu), an unemployed factory worker with a drinking problem, and their young son. When Mi-ok meets film-maker Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), who is preparing a documentary and gathering testimonies from blue-collar employees battling their bosses, she encourages her husband to speak up. But as the couple grows closer to Ye-ji and her handsome businessman spouse Sang-woo (Zo In-sung), the fissures in their own relationship widen. From the opening subtitle, "Thou Shalt Not Covet" - a nod to Krzysztof Kieslowski's Ten Commandments-inspired 1989 mini-series Dekalog - Lee toys with the idea that each couple seemingly wants something the other has. While Mi-ok and her family are taken aback to see the wealth that Ye-ji and Sang-woo enjoy, there's an attraction the other way too - albeit one more concealed. Driven by a quartet of stellar performances, the best being Sul's emotionally wrought turn, and dealing with everything from workers' rights to psychological shame and mental fragility, this is first-class film-making.
