Review

A star rating of 1 out of 5.

Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan play feuding neighbours who harbour secret feelings for each other in this hammy Irish-set romantic comedy from Moonstruck writer John Patrick Shanley. The American filmmaker and playwright adapts his own play, Outside Mullingar, to tell the story of farmers Rosemary Muldoon (Blunt ) and Anthony Reily (Dornan). They're caught up in family rivalries, curses and youthful squabbles as they try to retain control of the land they stand to inherit. When Anthony's father (Christopher Walken) threatens to sell the farm to his American nephew (Jon Hamm), Anthony and Rosemary must face up to their desires in order to attain their dreams. While the film's leads offer pure charm, they can't distract from a poorly developed script that is filled with tired stereotypes. The folksy clichés and dodgy accents don't help, and the film veers into utter nonsense territory by the final act. A wild misfire that is a waste of both thyme and talent.
