Following Your Name and Weathering with You, this is another charming and thought-provoking animated offering from Japanese director Makoto Shinkai. Living in Kyushu, 17-year-old Suzume (voiced by Nanoka Hara) is happy-go-lucky despite the loss of her mother in the Tohoku earthquake of 2011. This natural disaster was no isolated incident, as Suzume discovers when she meets Souta (Hokuto Matsumura), a young man on a mission to close off a series of portals that have unleashed ecological catastrophes across the country. So begins a strange and increasingly surreal road movie, which sees Suzume encounter a mischievous talking cat who turns Souta into a three-legged stool. It's often funny, too, especially when the feline becomes an Instagram sensation. Shinkai smartly weaves real-world themes into a fantastical story that will appeal to all ages, and the vibrant images further confirm his reputation as animated cinema's successor to Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki.
