Summary

Relationship drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. 1950s Connecticut: young suburban couple Frank and April Wheeler have two children and a financially comfortable life. But while Frank works in the city, April has foregone her dream of becoming an actress to be a housewife. So when she announces one night that she wants the family to move to Paris where she can be the breadwinner, the cracks in their marriage soon begin to appear.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet captured all the idealism of first love in Titanic, but this adaptation of Richard Yates's acclaimed novel finds them playing characters a little older and a lot more jaded. Frank and April Wheeler are a married couple struggling to reconcile their youthful dreams of "what could have been" with the humdrum reality of life in 1950s suburbia. It's a return to familiar territory for British director Sam Mendes (Winslet's then real-life husband), who exposed the rot behind those white picket fences in the Oscar-winning American Beauty. However, on this occasion there is much less humour, with extramarital affairs, an unwanted pregnancy and a lost opportunity to make a fresh start all compounding the Wheelers' misery. The dialogue often feels a bit stagey, but Winslet and DiCaprio manage to get beyond the bluster and the self-indulgence of their roles to prove that, however special we think we are, we all share the same heartaches.
