Working from a Quentin Tarantino script, Tony Scott directs this fast-moving tale of a movie-obsessed comic-store worker (Christian Slater) who meets hooker Patricia Arquette and gets hitched. However, after the pair accidentally steals a fortune in cocaine from her pimp (Gary Oldman), the honeymoon is soon over and oblivion beckons. The film blends Hong Kong gangster movie clichés, film noir revisionism and slick ultra violence to create an acid cocktail, with Scott's superb visual style the icing on the cake. Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer and James Gandolfini are among a host of great cameos, while the conversation between Dennis Hopper (as Slater's ex-cop dad) and Christopher Walken's smiling mobster has gone down in movie history as one of the great face-offs.
