Steve Morrissey
A typically strong Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom, Warrior) anchors director Kieran Darcy-Smith's atmospheric feature debut, which follows four affluent Australians on a hedonistic holiday to Cambodia - from which only three return. Darcy-Smith alternates between the booze, pills and beachside raves of over there and the silences, suspicions and recriminations of back home, as everyone tries to work out what happened to the missing Jeremy (Antony Starr). The dark thriller dynamics of 2001's Lantana are evoked here and there, but what the director is really interested in is the relationship between Dave (Edgerton), his pregnant wife (Felicity Price, who also co-wrote the script) and her younger (and as we are frequently reminded) hotter sister (Teresa Palmer). All in all, it's a solid exercise in slow-build tension, only slightly undercut by the reveals-all ending.
