A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Terry Staunton

Based on the memoir by Olympic skiing hopeful-turned-casino queen Molly Bloom, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut pops and fizzes with razor-sharp dialogue and visual energy that recalls the Martin Scorsese of GoodFellas and The Wolf of Wall Street. Jessica Chastain is on top form as the titular Molly, whose savvy business head makes her a star in the gambling community, but leads to trouble and hardship when the Mob and the FBI take an interest. Her confident performance is matched step by step by Idris Elba as her initially sceptical lawyer, while comic stars Michael Cera and Chris O'Dowd are almost as powerful in unfamiliar dramatic roles. Special mention goes to Kevin Costner as Molly's overbearing father, but every major player is served well by Sorkin's fast-paced and enthralling script, which breathes exciting life into what, on paper, may seem like dry and overly complicated subject matter.
