An intimate, visually stunning Italian drama set during the tail-end of the Second World War, this tale of secrets and lies spirits audiences into a hermetically sealed world far from the conflict that raged across Europe. The focus falls sharply on a family of seven, headed by Adele (Roberta Rovelli) and Cesare (Tommaso Ragno), the stern, white-haired patriarch who also serves as the teacher in the eponymous Alpine village's one-room school. While writer/director Maura Delpero takes pleasure in showing the routines and hardships of daily life in this remote locale, it's the daughters that gradually take centre stage, notably eldest Lucia (Martina Scrinzi) who has eyes for Pietro (Giuseppe De Domenico), a deserter from the war hiding out in the village. Winner of the Grand Jury prize at the Venice film festival, it's a ravishing movie that rewards patience, not least with cinematographer Mikhail Krichman's astounding vistas, so rich you can practically feel the snow on your skin.
