Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

An incendiary satire set in modern-day India, The White Tiger burns with anger and provocative mischief. Adapted from Aravin Adiga's eponymous Man Booker prize-winning debut novel by his friend, Ramin Bahrani (99 Houses), this compelling rags-to-riches story centres on an intriguing, multi-faceted performance by Adarsh Gourav. He plays Balram, a low-caste country bumpkin whose future looks bleak until he talks his way into the job of driver for Ashok (Rajkummar Rao), the liberal son of the landlord who has been sucking money out his village for years. Treated relatively warmly for a servant by Ashok and his free-spirited wife Pinky (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), Balram feels like part of their family, but then a betrayal shakes him awake. Gourav is magnetic as Balram, who charms and chills as he confronts life's injustices with a growing rage. Directed with energy and handsomely shot, The White Tiger is a bracing and at times confrontational movie. It loses some momentum in the middle, but rallies for an unnerving climax.
