Escape Room: Tournament of Champions

This ridiculously entertaining sequel to the 2019 "locked-room" horror returns with ever-more elaborate traps, plus more dumbed down clues to solve and a fiendish cliffhanger payoff. After a recap of events from the first film, which is cannily couched as a trauma-reducing therapy session, survivors Taylor Russell and Logan Miller try to unravel who is behind the deadly games. Before long, they find themselves ensnared in another maze of advanced escape rooms created by the mystery organisation Minos, alongside four other psychologically damaged participants. Hazards this time around include razor-sharp bank lasers, acid rain and seaside quicksand, with the characters' squabbling reaching fever pitch amid the ludicrous twists and turns. Returning director Adam Robitel can't quite propel his film beyond predictability, but Russell and Miller prove engaging leads, while the all-important production design is impressively handsome.
