Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this feel-good, lifestyle-led drama, a bereaved group of friends and family comes together to realise a departed loved one's dream of opening a cake shop in trendy Notting Hill. The undertaking has a therapeutic effect on the departed Sarah's retired trapeze-artist mother (Celia Imrie), business partner (Shelly Conn) and ballet-prodigy daughter (Shannon Tarbet). But the overnight success of the business owes everything to the skills of Rupert Penry-Jones's Michelin-starred pastry chef, who adds cake delicacies from around the world to the menu. While a professed love letter to London, Love Sarah is rather parochial and strays little further than Portobello Market and chichi west London surrounds, making Richard Curtis's vision of Notting Hill seem like South Central LA. Aimed squarely at the Bake Off brigade, Eliza Schroeder's directorial debut is as light as one of Yotam Ottolenghi's Persian Love Cakes, and it gifts Imrie with a decent role amid the icing sugar.
