The High Note

Dakota Johnson swaps Fifty Shades of Grey for the rather more colourful surrounds of the Los Angeles music scene, playing Maggie, the put-upon personal assistant to superstar singer and dyed-in-the-wool diva Grace (Tracee Ellis Ross, daughter of iconic singer Diana Ross). Tired of rehashing old hits for a play-it-safe record label, Grace wants to record new material, and ambitious Maggie wants to produce it. But will they get their way? The High Note may be as comically corny as Kansas in August, but it's breezily enjoyable nonetheless, and Johnson is patently enjoying herself. Ross is the real revelation, though, her riveting performance proving the apple hasn't fallen far from her mother's tree.
