Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

If you are thinking about watching this erotic sci-fi film, there are some things that you should know. Firstly, it is really slow. Secondly, it is quite strange. Thirdly, it features lots of bodily fluids. Fourthly, director Claire Denis (making her English-language debut) says that it shouldn't be classified as science fiction. Still, the story takes place on a spaceship, where a man named Monte (Robert Pattinson) is looking after a baby girl. We soon learn that they are the last survivors of a mysterious mission, and from here the film occasionally jumps back in time, gradually revealing what happened to the crew. The flashbacks include some dark, violent sequences that grab your attention, but these are few and far between. In fairness, there are times when High Life is intriguing and strangely mesmerising. Mostly, though, it is a dull, confusing experience that never really goes anywhere.
