Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Morgan Spurlock, the director of Super Size Me, takes a behind-the-scenes look at the teen pop sensation that won worldwide success after coming third in the X-Factor TV talent show. But despite having an Oscar-nominated award-winning documentary-maker calling the shots, it's a film that reveals little about the quintet their adoring fans won't already know. This is a typical and standard biography, full of clearly choreographed backstage japes, wide shots of thousands of screaming fans, and proud, weepy mums hugging their pin-up sons, Niall, Zayn, Liam, Louis and Harry. Interviews with "serious" music journalists and X Factor supremo Simon Cowell (who also produced the film) attempt to add gravitas by dissecting the group's phenomenal success. The role social media played in catapulting the boys to the top is interesting; ultimately though, it's the high-energy concert sequences that work best, giving a more tangible sense of the frenzy surrounding the band.
