Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline form an attention-grabbing line-up in director Jon Turteltaub's geriatric take on The Hangover. It's just as well they have presence because that's all there is to sustain this flimsy story, in which Douglas's pensionable lothario finally decides to settle down - with a woman who could be his granddaughter. Hence, the old gang assemble for a stag do in Sin City, but it's mostly clean, safe entertainment with all the scenes you'd expect - dancing, drinking, doddering - and De Niro once again sending up his gangster image. A few spats thicken the plot, and there's a smidgen of pathos when Mary Steenburgen's lounge-room singer comes between De Niro and Douglas and revives memories of youthful affairs of the heart. But overall it's clear to see the guys are having a great time, so for all its laziness, it's impossible to hate this movie. Everything about it is soft and easy to swallow.
