When druid Getafix is injured collecting berries for a secret potion, he decides to appoint a successor to the magic ways and ensure the mystery doesn't go with him to the grave. More than 50 years after making the leap from comic book to cinema, the cartoon super-Gauls get a new outing, the first not to be based on a previous story. Passable but patchy, this animated adventure wobbles between wryly amusing, laugh-out-loud funny and charmlessly frenetic. Village druid Getafix gets himself in a fix when he falls from a tree and, mindful of his mortality, decides it's time to find a suitable someone to succeed him as maker of the village's secret potion. But self-appointed prime candidate is banished dark druid Demonix, practitioner of forbidden magic. Much mayhem and some fashionably feminist Roman-bashing ensues before Demonix gets his comeuppance and Getafix's true successor is found, right under his bulbous nose. The film is fast-paced and kind of fun but may struggle to break out beyond existing series fans, at least in an era with more kidflix than you can shake several stix at.
