Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

We go back to 1987 in this musically tinged tour of adolescence, following wide-eyed teen Jude (Asa Butterfield) as he travels to New York to reconnect with his father and find out who he is. After a heady start, a large amount of melodrama makes Jude's nostalgic coming-of-age journey hard to swallow. Butterfield is an ineffective lead, watching the lives of the people around him unravel without taking any significant part in his own story. Supporting characters provide an entertaining diversion, with Ethan Hawke's hippy father a particular highlight. That charisma gets lost in the shuffle, however, as subplots bunch together in a confusing pile. As the talented cast works through the muddled story, Jude's wistful narration implies there's something to be learned from all of this. Sadly, it's not exactly clear what that is, other than that New York can be quite precarious for unaccompanied teenagers.
