Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Watchable without being remotely original or remarkable, this low-scare, Final Dimension-ish horror film features Joey King as Clare, a bullied high-school girl who, courtesy of bin-trawling dad Ryan Phillippe, is gifted an ornate wooden McGuffin. Turns out it's a Chinese wish-pot whose inner demon grants the owner seven wishes, like Aladdin only with bells on. Clare gets what's going on when she wishes near the pot that her prime bullier should go rot. And guess what - she does. But with great power comes great consequences. And, in this instance, that means a compensatory blood sacrifice for each wish. Plus the pot proves darned difficult to get shot of once Clare realises it's a poison chalice. Pitched at horror fans who like to be mildly unsettled rather than grossed out, Wish Upon is decently made, but essentially it's a wet-afternoon watch.
