Brimstone

A young woman fights for survival in this grim, blood-soaked western, which is divided into four chapters. The first introduces us to Liz (Dakota Fanning), a mute midwife who is spooked when a scarred preacher (Guy Pearce) walks into her local church. Who is this man? How does she know him? The next two chapters jump back in time to answer these questions, following Liz as she endures a series of horrifying ordeals, before returning to the present for the finale. Along the way, characters are stabbed, hung, tortured, mutilated, and defiled. Inevitably, some viewers may find certain scenes are unpleasant and distasteful. But if you like films of an unusually dark hue, you'll find an intriguing revenge thriller here that has the ability to get under the skin. Filled with chilling sequences, Brimstone ensures that you'll be rooting for Fanning's tormented heroine, but you'll be put through the wringer in the process.
