Oscar-nominated comedy-drama about a grieving middle-aged curmudgeon befriended by his no-nonsense neighbour. In Swedish with subtitles.
This lovingly crafted dramedy from Swedish director Hannes Holm is concerned with the making and mending of a misanthrope, as it follows a "nitpicking obstructionist" pondering his life. When his attempts at suicide are repeatedly thwarted, Rolf Lassgard's bad-tempered widower reconnects with the close-knit community who live in fear of his self-imposed standards - befriending a vivacious mixed-race family, taking in a cat, giving shelter to a gay teen. Based on Fredrik Backman's 2012 novel, it teases out the decency and vulnerability in the initially unapproachable sourpuss, aided by Lassgard's subtly endearing turn. Nominated for two Oscars, it presents a rich tapestry of humanity - romance, heroism, tragedy and, best of all, simple acts of kindness. The film delights in its protagonist's peculiarities, including his mistrust of authority figures and unhealthy interest in Saabs, an obsession that eventually puts paid to a friendship. Given its winning penchant for eccentric details and the blackest of humour, A Man Called Ove feels a shade sentimental in its final stretch; like its hero, it boasts a surprisingly big heart.
