Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This enchanting film makes for perfect, slow entertainment, a celebration of tenant farmers Tom and Kay Hutchinson and their life breeding Swaledale sheep in the upper reaches of Teesdale in County Durham. They are a cheerful couple who love doing what they do, and they are joined by their three delightful children; each shares their parents' unsentimental, pragmatic approach to livestock. Director Magali Pettier is on the farm with her camera as snow hugs the slopes of the dale, and through spring and into summer as the family attends its village show. The Hutchinsons make paltry money, but that's never the point. Theirs is an enviable life.
