Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The third film in writer/director James DeMonaco's violent but potent franchise sees the annual free-for-all killing spree known as the Purge come under threat from reforming US presidential candidate Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell). Unfortunately for Roan, that puts her in the crosshairs of the Founding Fathers, the prime movers behind a policy of social cleansing fuelled by the nation's blood lust. On her side, however, is Frank Grillo's Leo Barnes, no longer the embittered, nameless loner from previous instalment The Purge: Anarchy but now Roan's rugged bodyguard who comes to her rescue when a hit squad comes a-calling. Mykelti Williamson (Con Air) brings homespun honesty and humour as a store owner who reluctantly teams up with the couple as they seek to dodge drones, fiendish femme fatales and other trigger-happy maniacs. But the once-intriguing concept of legalised anything-goes mayhem is wearing thin with this threequel despite satirical barbs about murder tourism and evangelical right-wingers in government. No one can deny the commitment of the cast, but the law of diminishing returns dictates that it's time for the Purge to go.
