Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

The BBC TV British intelligence services drama Spooks ended in 2011 after ten cracking series, and this big-screen spin-off is essentially an extended bonus episode. It's written and directed by experienced alumni of the series, and anchored to Peter Firth's dreadnought MI5 boss Harry Pearce (flanked by familiar faces Lara Pulver, Tim McInnerny and Hugh Simon), but the film's commercial new asset is Kit Harington, hot from Game of Thrones. His retired, sulky protégé is brought back into the fold to foil an imminent attack on London (a Spooks standby), threatened by Elyes Gabel's charismatic terrorist. A couple of effective set pieces aside (one at the South Bank; another within the Pinewood-built underground HQ), this strains to fill its extra 40 minutes and Harington proves an underpowered lead compared to TV forebears Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes and Richard Armitage.
