In this woolly wilderness horror, an estranged father and son take a road trip to tackle past traumas but instead have an otherworldly close encounter, instead. Laden with confusing and overwrought flashbacks, the film is at least sustained by a convincing turn from genre veteran Lance Henriksen (as the hoary, he-man sheriff dad). But Sean Elliot as his spooked offspring is merely twitchy and annoying, particularly when he's forced to confront both his own demons and something more tangible after Henriksen is crocked while in the backwoods. The question about whether their experiences are real or imagined soon becomes moot, as director Scooter Downey's debut feature is neither suspenseful nor horrific enough to qualify as anything but a run-of-the-mill excursion into the unknown.
