Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This spirited road movie about a family of social-justice warriors ticks plenty of feel-good boxes with its cool dad, cute kids and overarching message of "sticking it to The Man". Viggo Mortensen plays Ben, a radically left-wing father of six, who keeps his brood out in the wild, teaching them about art and literature but mostly survival. The death of Ben's wife is the catalyst that brings them all out of hiding and into contact with the outside world, including Ben's rich, right-wing father-in-law (Frank Langella). This bittersweet comedy doesn't hold up to very much scrutiny, but the young cast are smart and likeable, shepherded by the reliably charismatic Mortensen. However, it's hard to see what the mainstream will make of a film that makes fun of mass-market consumerism and has its heroes shun Christmas to celebrate Noam Chomsky Day.
