Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

If it were proposed as fiction, the story of Mosab Hassan Yousef would beggar belief. The son of a leading light in Hamas and therefore ideally placed to monitor any potential terrorist activity by the group, Yousef was persuaded to turn informer by Gonen Ben Yitzhak, a senior operative within Israel's top secret security force Shin Bet. Quite what prompted Yousef to accept such a dangerous and possibly suicidal mission is never fully explained, but this often gripping documentary goes a long way to portraying the paranoid mindset of a man who went on to betray his closest family. Despite its tense, spy-movie stylings, The Green Prince stops short of a satisfying payoff, raising too many unanswered questions in its closing moments that, somewhat ironically for a film about keeping secrets, leaves us with a sense that there's more to this tale than we're ever likely to be told.
